Musica Sacra

Musica Sacra, an annual European music festival of regilious music all over Maastricht and it's historical buildings.

Acceptance and resignation are key concepts in the overlapping areas of calling, choice and destiny. See: Maria’s exemplary acceptance of her pregnancy; see: the joyful resignation in austerity and obedience of a monastic and a hermit; see also: the wise life lessons of Taoism or of those who refuse to follow his or her vocation. Such resignation, as a rule, does not yield noisy champions, but room for a liberating and life-defining floor that moves in a direction opposite to that of the madness of the day.

Description

Starting in 1983 as a European Festival of Religious Music spread over four weekends, Musica Sacra Maastricht developed in the intervening years into a compact and broadly programmed arts festival in which the annually changing theme plays a key role.

The multiform offer seeks a confrontation of cultures, styles and disciplines. It examines the contradictions between historical and current, young and old, secular and religious and high and low art, and how to make unexpected connections between these opposites. To emphasize the indelible link with the historical development of the city of Maastricht, Musica Sacra Maastricht programs its festival activities in the many beautiful historical buildings in the city center of Maastricht.

The first thing I designed was a poster concept for this years edition of Musica Sacra. Musica Sacra wanted to keep the ‘stained glass’ colors. So I decided to use the ‘stained glass’ look too and give it a little twist so it was still my own design.

Because Musica Sacra is well-known for their music, I decided to bring forward a musician. In this poster I used a man who plays a fado, a Portugese guitar. The fado has 12 steel strings, tuned in 6 pairs. In the three lowest pairs, one string is always tuned an octave higher than the other. I chose this instrument because this year there are a few Fado players performing. I decided to keep the typography calm and collected. I chose to use a rounder serif font, it’s subtle yet classic for the festival.

Description

After the poster design, Musica Sacra wanted an art piece about anything related to the subject acceptance and resignation. This was a team project that I was lucky to be making/realizing with Ivo Heffels and Eline Pechler, two of my class mates.

We decided to make a video about the pain people endure with chronic pain. These people live with pain each day, and because you can’t always see that these people are in pain, it’s very hard for others to understand their pain. We decided to interview a psychologist who is an expert in pain rehabilitation. After that the interview answers, we created a story about a person with chronic pain and how it feels. And we created images and video’s about this subject.
